Wireless Router Security Tips ( Wi-Fi )
Are you using wireless router
at your home ? please spare some minutes and read it before you get
hacked by hackers. This article will teach you some tips which will help
you to secure your Wi-Fi network.
As we know wireless networks
are becoming a very popular means to access internet whether you are at
home, airport or in your college and apart from that it gives so many
important features like easy setup or connection with smart
phones, gadgets, portable media devices, video games and other wireless
home appliances.
Comparing with traditional wired
network,Wi-Fi is more vulnerable but don’t worry because you can secure
yourself by just implementing these useful tips.
Wireless Router Security Tips
Tip 1 – Disable default router name
Every router has its unique name
which is generally the name of the router brands or manufacturer name on
some particular router for example : Linksys,Cisco,Netgear,Apple
Airport,D-Link.When you connect your laptop or any portable wireless
device with your Wi-Fi router it says “Connecting to your router name”,Router
regularly broadcast its name to the surrounding area( normally 100
meters). So you need to disable your default router name (which is
generally SSID or ESSID depending on the router brand) so that the
outsiders will not come to know about your Router brands because if you
did not change your default router name then it will be easier for
hackers to implement predefined hacking steps which are there for the
particular router brands,So let them waste their time on searching
router manufacturer.
Tip 2 – Enable Data Encryption
In wireless security setting of your
wireless router, there are generally three types of encryption
viz.WEP,WPA,WPA2. Out of these three encryption types WEP is a old and
very common encryption technique which can be found on most of the
routers and it is easily Hackable.WPA2 encryption is a latest which uses
AES algorithm and give 256 bit encryption that is highly impossible to
hack.So make sure you select WPA2+AES encryption and assign a shared key
( or password ) which will be asked every time when you try to connect
your wireless device with your router.
Tip 3 – MAC ID Filtering
Every laptop,PC or any network device
has a unique MAC Address(MAC ID) which is used to identify any
individual network. So you can paste the MAC ID’s of different network
devices in MAC ID Filtering settings in router and can only give access
to those network devices in your home through which you generally access
your wireless (Don’t worry you can change them whenever you want),It
will reduce the possibility of hacking to a greater extent because
whenever an unknown device tries to connect to your router, router will
deny the request because the MAC ID of external device will not match
the MAC ID’s in router MAC ID Filtering settings.
Tip 4 – Disable File Sharing
Make sure you haven’t shared any of
your folders because if an outsider is able to crack or to hack your
WI-Fi then atleast he/she will not be able to access your private date.
Although nothing is 100% secure
but by applying these tips, you can secure(95%) your home wireless
(Wi-Fi) router from the hackers.
