How to Change the Default Search Engine in Firefox?

In Firefox, you can perform searches from both the address bar as well as the search box. The default search engines are different for the address bar and the search bar. Changing one of them does not change the other. In this article we shall see how to change the default search engine in both the cases.

Change the default search engine of Search Box in firefox

Changing the search engine for the search box is pretty easy. Just click on the drop down arrow beside the search engine icon and select a search engine of your choice. Firefox will remember this and will give search results using this search engine from now onwards whenever you type in the search bar.
Change the default search engine of Address Bar in firefox
Whenever you type a keyword in Firefox’s Address bar (also known as location bar), it’s default search engine is used to show results for that keyword. If you want to change this default search engine of location bar, then you will have to edit about:config of Firefox.

Assuming that you want to change your default search engine to Bing here are the steps to do it:
Make sure you do this carefully.

1. Open about:config in Firefox (type about:config in the address bar and hit enter )
2. Search for keyword.url from the filter box.
3. Double click on this entry. It will open a dialog where you can edit the 'keyword.url' string.
In case you want to change the default search engine to some other search engine like Google, Yahoo, Ask, Conduit, Altavista etc. then simply replace searchengine with the name of the search engine in the string:
For example in case of Google, the url will be:

How to Create your own custom Google search

How to Create your own custom Google search

If you have ever wanted to search a select few of your favorite websites, use the Google custom search to create your own search engine. Using this free service allows you to specify what sites to search or exclude from the results. For example, Computer Hope created a Windows system processes and services custom search that searches a few dozen of the best places to find information about files and Windows system processes. Using this custom search, we can quickly see the exact results when looking up a file such as "atapi.sys", without having to hunt through the millions of forum posts that contain this file.
Google allows you to make as many custom searches as you want and even gives you the code to implement a custom search on your own page. Using Google Custom search would also allow you to setup a custom search that searches your own web page, blog, or twitter account.

Know your keyboard shortcuts
Like any good browser, Google Chrome has several dozen different keyboard shortcuts that can help improve your productivity. Below is just a few of our top favorites.
Ctrl + 1-8 = Pressing Ctrl and any number 1 through 8 will move to the corresponding tab in your tab bar.
Ctrl + 9
= Switch to the last tab.
Ctrl + H
= Show history
Ctrl + J
= Open Downloads window
Ctrl + K = Move the cursor to the Omnibox (address bar)
Ctrl + T = Open a new tab
Use the Omnibox to do more than just search
Google Chrome Omnibox math operationsThe Google Omnibox does more than displaying the URL and allowing you to search. It is also capable of performing mathematical calculations (as shown in the picture) and even answer questions such as "how many cups are in 2 liters?" Try adding any math calculation now in the Omnibox without pressing enter to have the results shown.
Sync Chrome with your Google account
Chrome allows you to sync your settings, passwords, and bookmarks to your Google account. This is a great feature for anyone who switches computers (e.g. work computer and home computer) and needs access to all their bookmarks and account settings. You can log into your Google Account and adjust your sync settings by going into Settings under the "wrench"  Chrome wrench icon or "Menu" Chrome Menu button icon.
Pin your frequently used tabs
Pinned tabs
Pin your favorite tabs to save space on your tab bar without losing quick access to your favorite pages. In the above picture, you can see we have eight pinned tabs, which would have normally consumed our tab bar.
To Pin a tab right-click on any open tab and click Pin Tab.
Bonus tip: You can also click-and-drag a pinned tab to the position of your choice.
Use the Autofill feature
Use the Chrome Autofill feature for automatically filling out any online form with common fields such as your name, e-mail, address, etc. To enter the Autofill values follow the below steps.
  1. Click on the "wrench"  Chrome wrench icon or "Menu" Chrome Menu button icon in the top right corner.
  2. Click Settings
  3. At the bottom of Settings, click Show advanced settings...
  4. Click Manage Autofill settings under Passwords and forms.
  5. In the Autofill settings window, click the Add new street address button.
  6. Fill out all address settings you wish to be saved and click ok.
  7. Once complete try out your Autofill using the below form. To enter the values click on any of the below fields and select the name of your Autofill.
First name: Last name:
Address:
City: State: Zip:
Phone number: E-mail:
Resize text boxes
Chrome gives you the ability to resize any text field. This can be extremely useful for when you're filling out a form that doesn't seem big enough for all the information you're entering. To resize the text field click-and-drag the bottom right corner of the box. Below is a text field that can be used as an example.
Use the Chrome Task manager
Since each open tab runs it its own sandbox to help with browser stability, it can be difficult to see the overall system resources being used. For example, in the Windows Task Manager you will see multiple instances of Google Chrome running for each open tab.
Use the Chrome Task manager to show you how much memory and CPU resources each open tab and extension you have installed is using. To open the Task manager press Shift + Esc or Click on the "wrench"  Chrome wrench icon or "Menu" Chrome Menu button icon in the top right corner, click Tools, and then Task manager. If you want to get real geeky click the stats for nerds click at the bottom of the Task manager.
Quickly close a tab
Any tab can be closed by clicking on the x on the tab. However, there are much quicker ways to close a tab. For example, if you have a mouse with a wheel pushing in on the wheel anywhere on the tab will close the tab. The shortcut keys Ctrl + W or Ctrl + F4 will also close the current open tab.
Bonus tip: Middle-clicking on any link will also open that link in a new tab.
Use Chrome commands
Use the chrome:// commands to access many hidden features of Chrome. There is a few dozen of these commands available that will allow you to do everything from viewing DNS information, GPU information, look for conflicts, setting flags, and much more. A listing of these commands can be accessed by typing chrome://chrome-urls in the Omnibox.
Install Extensions
No Internet browser will have every feature you want, therefore we suggest visiting the Google Chrome Webstore to install free extensions for your browser. Today, there are thousands of available extensions, games, and other add-ons that can be installed into your browser.

If you have a broadband Internet connection and use Firefox you can decrease the time each web page you visit loads by enabling pipelining. In other words if the page you are visiting has dozens of images it will load more than one image at a time, making the web page appear faster. Follow the below steps to enable pipelining in Firefox.
  1. In the address bar type about:config and press enter.
  2. In pipelining in the search box, as shown below.
  3. Double-click network.http.pipelining to set the Value to true.
  4. Double-click network.http.proxy.pipelining to set the Value to true.
  5. Make sure network.http.pipelining.maxrequests is set to a value of more than 30.
  6. Right-click in an empty portion of the about:config window and click New and then Integer. Enter nglayout.initialpaint.delay as the name of the integer and for the value make it 0.

How do I set my browser to Incognito or Private mode?

Question

How do I set my browser to Incognito or Private mode?

Answer

Note: While in Private or Incognito mode nothing is stored to your computer, however, this does not mean you are anonymous on the Internet. Each page that you visit still recognizes your IP address. Therefore, if someone had the legal abilities to track you using your IP address an ISP, web site, and even a search engine server log may contain your IP address, which could be tracked.
Follow the below steps for your browser to enable Private browsing while on the Internet.

Internet Explorer users
Keyboard Shortcut = Ctrl + Shift + P
or
  1. Click the Safety drop down menu.
  2. Click InPrivate Browsing.
Chrome users
Keyboard Shortcut = Ctrl + Shift + N
or
  1. Click on the "wrench"  Chrome wrench icon or "Menu" Chrome Menu button icon in the top right corner.
  2. Click New Incognito Window.
Firefox users
Keyboard Shortcut = Ctrl + Shift + P
or
  1. Click Tools.
  2. Click Start Private Browsing.

How To Speed Up Firefox Tweaking Guide

This article reviews the steps you can take if Firefox is running slow or misbehaving. Firefox 17.0.1 has just been released – I already discussed the new features which contained many technical improvements but there is still more you can do to speed it up or resolve problems.
These initial steps are a basic requirement to keep Firefox running smoothly and safely – there is little point trying to improve performance if you are using outdated and insecure components…
1. Update Firefox – if you’re not running the latest version you are more at risk from unfixed vulnerabilities and will not benefit from the latest technical improvements:
  • Select Firefox (or Help from the menu bar) then ‘About Firefox’ and press the ‘Check For Updates’ button. Apply updates if available then retry – the Check message should confirm ‘Firefox is up to date’.
2.  Remove extensions you do not need – the more extensions you have enabled, the slower and less stable Firefox may become:
  • Select Firefox (or Tools from the menu bar) then Add-ons to open the Add-ons Manager. Click on Extensions and, if you no longer need an extension, Remove it – if in doubt, at least Disable it. Be ruthless – less is definitely more here…
3. Update extensions – the easiest way to always keep extensions up to date is to open the Add-ons Manager and click the Tools ‘cog’ at the top then select (tick) ‘Update Add-ons Automatically’.
  • To perform a manual update, click the Tools ‘cog’ then select ‘Check for Updates’ and apply any that are found.
4.  Disable plugins you do not need – as with extensions, the more plugins you have enabled, the more problems Firefox may encounter:
  • Open the Add-ons Manager. Click on Plugins and, if you do not need a plugin, disable it. If you disable a specific plugin and ever do visit a site that needs it, just re-enable it.
[The only plugins enabled on my system are Shockwave Flash and Silverlight for streaming videos. Amongst my disabled plugins are Microsoft DRM x 2, Quicktime, VLC, Windows Media Player and Google Update - none of which I have ever needed].
5. Update plugins – plugins from third parties such as Adobe and Oracle are often targeted by malicious websites so it is important to keep them up to date (and new versions often include performance benefits):
  • Follow my guide to update them – it also warns against the possible error when checking the status of a Java plugin.
Now that you have Firefox, extensions and plugins optimized and up to date, progress to the next section.
Backing Up
The next section tweaks Firefox configuration by changing or adding preferences in about:config. You should make a note of the ‘before’ and ‘after’ values of each tweak and (highly recommended) backup the Firefox preferences file that contains all these options first – in case you want to revert back to your original settings:
The configuration file is called prefs.js and is located in the system partition (usually C:\ drive):
In Windows XP   \Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile ID>.default\
In Vista and Windows 7   \Users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile ID>.default\
You may need to show hidden files to view the folder. Close Firefox first and then copy the prefs.js file to another location on your hard drive for backup.
Tweaking Firefox

Open Firefox and type about:config in the address bar then press Enter. Click the “I’ll be careful I Promise” warning button to reveal a long list of preferences.
To change a preference – if it is an integer (number) or a string (text), double click on the preference name and you will be prompted for the new value. If it is a Boolean (true or false) value, double click the entry to switch from true to false or vice versa.
To add a preference (if the preference name is not already listed in your about:config page) right click on an empty space in the about:config window and choose New followed by String, Integer or Boolean depending whether the value of the preference is text (String), a number (Integer) or true/false (Boolean)
Tip: The quickest way to find the right preference is to type part of the preference name into the Filter bar at the top of the config page – this automatically reduces the list to show only those preferences that include the text you typed.
Change or add the following preferences to the new values shown. If the preference is already set to this value then skip it and move on the next. If the preference does not exist then you need to add it:
browser.display.show_image_placeholders: false
Stops the display of placeholders while images are loading to speed up the page. Default is True
browser.tabs.animate: false
Disables all tab animation features (e.g. when you click the ‘New Tab’ (+) button) to make the tab interface feel quicker. Default is True
network.prefetch-next: true
This setting can automatically prefetch (load) the contents of pages linked to by the page you are viewing e.g. to load the homepage in the background, making it quicker for you to view next if you want to.
To take advantage of increased speed when browsing websites which use prefetch, keep this setting at the Default which is True.
[Some view prefetch as a possible security risk and disable it. My current view is that it isn’t a major concern – if a site is bad, it will just load bad stuff on the current page anyway without needing to prefetch it from elsewhere]
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server: 8
Increases the maximum number of persistent connections per server which can help speed up loading of multimedia rich sites. Default is 6
network.http.pipelining: true
Can send multiple requests to a server together in order to speed up loading of webpages. This is not supported by ALL servers – some servers may even behave incorrectly if they receive pipelined requests. Default is False
Optional: if you want Google searches in the address bar to search by name and go straight to the right website (e.g. ‘New York Times’ would go straight to the nytimes.com website) rather than just perform a standard Google search, change the value of the keyword.url preference as shown below below:
keyword.url: https://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=navclient&gfns=1&q=
(Note: this is for google.com – you may want to change it to your own country version e.g. for UK just replace the google.com bit with google.co.uk)
Now close Firefox and re-open it to apply all the tweaks.
Personalizing The Tweaks
The above tweaks improve speed and responsiveness in my own tests but your mileage may vary depending on your exact network configuration, sites visited and other software installed. One of the best things about Firefox is the variety of add-ons available but it does mean that there is an endless variety of possible configurations…
In particular the three ‘network.’ preferences may not be a ‘one size fits all’ solution for you – you may need to experiment to achieve the best settings for your particular installation e.g. by changing them one at a time to different values or back to the default setting. I provided the default settings above in case you wish to revert to them.
Enable Click To Play
Plugins (e.g. Flash Player) can consume significant resources and slow down page loading. Click to Play configures all plugins to only load on click which can dramatically increase the speeds of media rich pages.
This feature is not enabled by default at the time of writing (Firefox 17) but you can enable it via a simple change in about:config – see Activating Click To Play (half way down the page). You can also Add a Button to the Navigation Toolbar to quickly switch Click To Play on or off at the press of a button.
Don’t Load Tabs Until Selected
If you have set the option to ‘Show my windows and tabs from last time’ (in Options \ General) when Firefox starts, it may have to load multiple tabs – keen users may have dozens of open tabs which Firefox has to load in full each time it starts. This can really slow down the time it takes to open Firefox – a common complaint. To greatly speed up the loading process:
  • In Options \ Tabs tick the ‘Don’t load tabs until selected’ box and press OK – this menu option will still open all your saved tabs when Firefox starts but will only load the current tab which can save a lot of time:
Firefox15b
‘Don’t load tabs until selected’ – in Tabs menu
Search For Text More Quickly
This isn’t a performance tweak as such but speeding up the way in which you search for text within web pages can make using Firefox seem quicker.
Firefox includes an Accessibility setting that lets you search for text on a page instantly when you start typing instead of having to open the Find/Quick Find bar first – see ‘quicker searches‘ for a guide.
Compact Firefox Databases – Advanced Users
Compacting the databases is a hotly debated topic – Firefox should compact the main ‘places’ database itself but, even if it does, there are many other databases which can become fragmented and overly large – these may also impact performance.
See how to compact Firefox databases – this is recommended for advanced users only who are comfortable with backing up (and restoring if necessary) their Firefox profile.
Still Having Speed Or Reliability Issues?
If you have always let Firefox upgrade itself over many years and you still find that it is slow or unresponsive, it may be time to consider making a fresh start by doing a ‘factory reset’ of Firefox – see the ‘Reset Firefox button‘ section of my Firefox 13 review for more details. This is very much a last resort due to the amount of reinstallation and configuration that is required afterwards.
Finally, consider whether your expectations are reasonable – I read of people complaining about performance when they have 100+ add-ons installed or 100+ open tabs or are using very old hardware – they may be simply overloading Firefox beyond its realistic limits and would face the same issues with any other modern browser.
In my own testing over the last 2 years, Firefox has beaten Chrome and IE to become the clear winner for systems with limited memory…

How To Stop Auto Play Videos and Audios In Firefox

No More Annoying
AutoPlay Videos!

Ever been enjoying a webinar, video or mp3 while surfing the web…
… found an interesting article and started opening links from it in new tabs for reading later…
… when suddenly BLAHBLAHBLAHBLAH goes some noob over whatever you were listening to?
I HATE that!
I’m a multitasker at heart and even when I’m not I sometimes indulge in some music (I love music) and the last thing I want is something I opened in a tab to be blaring at me without permission.
I’m a big girl, if I want to hear them, I am perfectly capable of clicking on the play button thanks. (And in the case of auto-plays, the X close button on my browser.)
I tried using NoScript as a single solution but disabling all flash isn’t what I’m going for and the complicated white-list was not user-friendly.
When I’m doing blog syndication and commenting I may have as many as fifteen blogs open at a time… and trust me the one that autoplays is the one that the minute I can locate I close.
Fortunately, I’ve finally found a real easy to use, simple to set up, solution to putting an end to that nonesense!
Hurray for peace and quiet!
The Firefox Add-On is called “Stop Autoplay” and does exactly that.
You can find Stop Autoplay at: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/stop-autoplay/
In the Firefox Add-Ons menu you will find Stop Autoplay listed and be able to easily adjust its settings.
From there if you click options you have a number of tabs where you can adjust preferences.

Here in the “General Media” tab you can select whether to block only the autostart or to block all embedded media from loading without being clicked. You can use either option for this use but you will likely have a preference.

Some people want to disapprove everything except flash on certain blacklist sites, or only disallow flash on certain sites, but since the blogs I surf are random, I leave this on defaults blocking all.

The whitelist is very easy to use and allows me to add URL keywords to not affect and by listing my (partial) domain name and Facebook’s domain name, I’m able to prevent it from affecting those sites. This is useful for Facebook as FB does not allow auto play media in the first place (for good reason!).
Assuming I had NOT whitelisted Facebook, here is an example for you.
This first image is what the video looks like before it has opened the player.
This image shows the video, after the player has been opened, blocked from autoplaying but easily able to be clicked on to remove the block and then authorized to play. This black box shows us there is media “missing” that we can easily enable. When you click on that box, it enables the media and you would be seeing the video as it would appear and able to click the play button to start it.

Have I mentioned I LOVE Firefox? (No, I don’t know if there is a chrome version of this, if you know of one please leave it in the comments.)
You can find Stop Autoplay at: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/stop-autoplay/
There ya go! Now you too can surf in peace!
I really like how easy it is to whitelist a site with this and how it “just works” even right out of the box with no tinkering.
This probably will be a blessing to the site using autoplay as well since I am less likely to automatically close their site before having a look at whether they present valuable information. Win-Win!
Another one of my favorites is “Easy Comment” which helps speed up my commenting time on blogs!
I hope you’ll let me know your thoughts on auto play video, whether you think I’m a control freak on this topic, your favorite Firefox add-ons and if you find this one useful!

FBPurity – Easily Clean Up Your Facebook Newsfeed!

The #1 Way To Quickly
Make Your Facebook NewsFeed Manageable!

Face it… the Facebook News Feed is a freakin mess!
For anyone with more than a few friends, we actually need Facebook’s infamous “EdgeRank” to calculate which pieces are important and filter out the rest…
Unfortunately, that usually results in missing things we need to see.
Using the Most Recent view is more likely to prevent us from missing stuff… but it’s like trying to drink from a firehose!
What to do?
The answer is to grab the browser add-on “Fluff Busting Purity” (aka FB Purity) and use it to quickly and easily filter out things that you don’t want to see… while keeping the important stuff.
This means that YOU get to decide if all of those pictures of fluffy the dog from great aunt Freda are actually worth seeing daily in your stream (rather than Facebook deciding this!)
I’ve used this addon, in every browser I use, for well over two  years and frankly can’t stand Facebook without it now!
You’re going to love the ability of to suppress certain words from the newsfeed:
    – Friend join a business and won’t shut up about it?  (Filter out the business name)
    – Sick of all the political nonsense? (Filter out the political keywords… though you’ll also want to do this to muzzle political chatterboxes)
    – Relative have a hobby you either dislike or disapprove of? (Filter out words associated with the hobby)
Plus, you can chose to show or hide all of the elements of the Facebook page itself … greatly minimizing clutter.
You’ll also want to check out (and follow) their Fan Page: https://www.facebook.com/fluffbustingpurity

How To Enable Flash For Any Site In Windows 8 / RT Metro Internet Explorer 10

The Windows 8 maze is maybe distant from over, even if subdued, and possibly we adore it or hatred it (or are totally indifferent, for that matter), it stays a fact that Apple has a unequivocally healthy foe in a inscription terrain for a initial time. Windows 8 / RT shows guarantee in all a right places, and brings an component of ecosystem laxity that has gained a Cupertino hulk a large numbers entertain over quarter. Things seem to be headed in a right direction, for now.
This, however, nowhere implies that Microsoft’s charity comes giveaway of complaints and user problems. Take, for example, a Flash support in a Metro (or perhaps, should we call it a “Modern” UI) chronicle of Windows 8 and Windows RT, that is severely limited. Why? Because apparently, holding a base out of Apple’s book, Microsoft controls and decides that websites should be Flash-enabled for that browser.
IE10 Flash
While that shouldn’t be most of a problem on maybe a Desktop chronicle of Windows 8, what if we wanted to crop a website with Flash support on your Surface tablet? You might possibly select to go opposite Microsoft, or we can conduct over to XDA-Developers, where Marvin_S has come adult with an immensely elementary nonetheless effective penetrate for bypassing this restriction.
How it works?
Before we demeanour during what you’ll need to penetrate your Windows 8/RT’s Metro Internet Explorer, let’s plead how this works. In a internal Modern browser for Windows 8 and RT, Microsoft has opted for a singular Flash support by a use of a whitelist, whereby usually a domains contained within a list can arrangement Flash content. Microsoft continues to refurbish a list and sync your browser with their servers, so we always have a latest version.
This workaround takes control of that list and adds websites of your choice to it, so we can capacitate Flash-based calm on any website we like, and not get an sourroundings identical to Apple’s sealed handling system.
What we need?
Virtually zero outward of a unchanging collection that are already benefaction in your complement – a new URLs are combined by Notepad.
You will, however, have to change IE’s function to un-synchronize a whitelist from Microsoft’s servers. To do that, launch a Desktop chronicle of Internet Explorer 10 in Windows 8 and go to Tools Compatibility View Settings. There, deselect a choice that says “Download updated harmony list from Microsoft” to safeguard internal administration of a whitelist. Should we not make this adjustment, all changes that we make to a list yourself will be overwritten during a subsequent sync.

You can possibly locate this in Explorer, or perform a hunt in a base expostulate (C:) of your handling system.
Step 2: Alternatively, we might launch iecompatdata.xml directly in Notepad for modifying by entering a following fibre in a Run dialog (Win + R)
notepad “%HOMEPATH%AppDataLocalMicrosoftInternet ExplorerIECompatDataiecompatdata.xml”
Step 2
Step 3: Locate a meta tags Flash and /Flash; any website contained within these will arrangement Flash content. Simply supplement your preferred website’s URL here, save a changes and you’re good to go.
Step 3
Step 4: Once you’ve mutated a list to your liking, a final step is to undo IE’s browsing history. Launch IE10’s Modern version, go to Settings Internet Options Delete browsing history. It might also be correct to restart a browser as well, for good measure.
