How to Speed Up My DSL Connection

Upgrading your modem can drastically help increase DSL speed.
Upgrading your modem can drastically help increase DSL speed.
Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) is a type of high-speed Internet connection that uses standard telephone lines to supply a signal to a computer. With DSL, users can continue to use the telephone lines for voice calls without the need for additional wiring. While DSL offers speeds comparable to broadband, a connection can become sluggish due to a variety of reasons. By investing several minutes, you can increase your DSL Internet connection speed by up to 25 percent.

Modem Upgrade

Step 1

Contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and speak to a customer service representative regarding your current service. Ask the customer service representative if it would be possible to upgrade your modem to a newer model. In most cases, the ISP is willing to trade your old modem for a newer model.

Step 2

Unplug your old modem from your computer and bring the modem and the attached cables to the ISP office. Give the old modem to the front desk clerk and obtain a newer modem and cables. If needed, schedule an appointment with your ISP to have an Internet technician come to your home and install the equipment for you.

Step 3

Bring your new modem home and plug it back into the computer. Check the speed of your DSL connection after replacing the old modem with the new modem.

Virus Scan

Step 1

Download a trusted virus protection software or purchase professional virus software from your local computer store. Update the software before using it to ensure that it is current with all new types of virus and malware bugs that are circulating on the Web.

Step 2

Run a complete virus scan with the software. Viruses are known for causing computer systems and Internet browsers to become sluggish. Wait several minutes to several hours for the virus scan to finish, depending on the speed of your computer system.

Step 3

Delete any suspicious or fraudulent results that appear on the virus software quarantine list. The virus software will then prompt you to reboot your computer system to fully remove the quarantined items. Removing corrupted files that are slowing down your system should help speed up the performance of your DSL connection.

Network Reset

Step 1

Unplug the modem and router (if applicable) from your computer and electrical outlets. When the power source is removed, the lights on the front of the modem and router should go off.

Step 2

Wait 2 minutes to allow the modem and router to lose connection with the computer network. The computer's Network and Sharing Center should indicate that Internet connection is lost, via a desktop pop-up window.

Step 3

Plug the modem and router back into their designated spots on the computer. Supply power to both devices by plugging them back into the electrical outlets. Check to ensure that the DSL connection speed has increased once the network has been reset.
